The spark behind the flame
Hello!
My name is Jenni McCoy. I am an accomplished Instructional Designer and eLearning Developer based in the great state of Colorado. I love learning and helping others grow.
My early career was a slow burn into customer service. This grew into a spark helping our military while working at a Morale Welfare & Recreation (MWR) office in another great state of ours, Hawaii. I was fortunate to share offices across multiple military bases alongside the contracted travel agency at the time. This ultimately jumped my career into the travel industry. My flame began to grow as my passion for travel spread. I embrace my career in the travel industry and the numerous positions I’ve held. It has allowed me to not only see some amazing places but has also given me the ability to wear many hats and find another passion, helping others learn
My flame flourished in Learning and Development, where I spent 15+ years of my career. I love writing, editing, rewriting, and proofreading. I nerd out with the English language, fonts and typography. I especially love writing and rewriting policies and procedures. I love breaking down a process to make it comprehensive to others.
My next spark felt like a natural progression into Instructional Design and eLearning Development. I am a proud graduate of IDOL Courses Academy and am a Certified Professional in Training and Performance.
About my workflow
I take the backward approach to Instructional Design. I like to dig in and really understand your organization’s challenges. Is it truly a problem that can be solved with training or is it more of a cultural or behavior problem. If it is truly solvable with training, I’ll work through some adult learning theories to get a game plan. I focus on, but am not limited to, ADDIE, Merrill’s Five Principles, along with Memory and Cognitive Load Theory. I am serious about content. I have a three-tier approach for the learners: what is nice to know, what is good to know, and what really must be known for them to be successful. Give me a great authoring tool and I’ll sit designing and developing all day long.
My Instructional Design experience does not just lie in travel; I have completed successful projects in the medical device realm as well as within higher education. I may not always follow my passion on this path, but I always take it with me!
